Brown, CPO, owner of Impact Productivity believes small kitchens are spaces that can work, as long as you have a place for everything off the counter, leaving elbow room for the cook. "Otherwise making dinner becomes a stressful obstacle course punctuated by the crash of something being knocked off the counter," says Brown, who suggests putting your walls to work by storing your nicest pots and pans on pegs.
Like every detail in your cooking space, small kitchen furniture must be streamlined to fit the tight confines of the room. Maximize a minimal floor plan with seating and tables that suit your favorite room in the house without overwhelming it. The heart of every kitchen is the family table. Even in cramped quarters, the dining table, in any of its many forms, serves as a focal point. If you have an eat-in kitchen layout that can accommodate a traditional table, then be sure to pull out the measuring tape before choosing a table style. To prevent a boxed-in feeling, allow at least a 7-foot clearance for a table (3-1/2 feet on either side).
A rule of thumb to keep in mind when organizing a pantry or cupboard is to choose storage tools that will make your items visible and accessible. For example, a set of clear containers or jars to house dry goods, like cereal or grains, is a low-cost and worthy addition to any pantry. Other kitchen pantries and cupboards will benefit from hooks to hang utensils or pots out of the way and free up room for items that require shelf space.
