The two-walled design of a galley kitchen maintains the traditional "work triangle" that‘s essential to any effective kitchen design—this refers to the triangle created by the stove, refrigerator and sink. If cooks can easily access all of these kitchen features, cooking will be much more efficient and enjoyable. Galley kitchens generally achieve this design by placing two components of the triangle on one wall of the kitchen, and the third component on the opposite wall.
One of the first things you‘ll need to consider for your open kitchen is how many walls you want to keep standing in the space. If any of the walls are load-bearing, your decision may be made for you (you should probably keep those). But if you‘re relatively free and clear to take down any internal walls, you‘ll have an opportunity to keep as few as just one. Single-wall open kitchens are not uncommon, and they create the most open feel of any design—but you‘ll sacrifice a bit of storage to implement a one-walled open kitchen design.
Another great option for decorating kitchen walls is shelving. Especially in a smaller kitchen space, low profile shelves decorated with accents or supplies can be both attractive and efficient. You can even use them to add pops of color to the space by purchasing or painting them in bold hues.
Color Blocking—Color blocking is a popular trend in the fashion world, but it can work wonders with your decor as well. Pick neighbors on the color wheel; remember that warm hues pair with cold, and paint your upper cabinets one color and your lower cabinets the other.
